Balkan University Press is excited to share the publication of the book "The Church of Saint Sophia in Ohrid: Architecture, History, аnd Urban Context" by Ekaterina Namicheva Todorovska. This is the second volume of the Architecture and Design Series, edited by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marija Miloshevska Janakieska.

This book explores the historical, cultural, and architectural significance of one of Macedonia’s most important Byzantine monuments. The author situates the church within Ohrid’s geographic and urban evolution, from antiquity through medieval Slavic, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. It analyzes Saint Sophia’s construction phases, stylistic features, frescoes, and transformations. Comparative insights into Balkan urban development highlight the church’s role as both a religious and cultural hub. Ultimately, the study underscores Saint Sophia as a symbol of Ohrid’s layered heritage and identity.

The Architecture and Design book series explores cutting-edge developments across various architecture and design domains in the country and abroad. Looking for contributions encompassing a wide range of approaches, including theoretical, critical, and generative research and practical insights, the series topics may cover diverse disciplines such as innovative design practices, sustainable architecture, building, interior and furniture design, urban and landscape planning, historical and cultural heritage preservation, and integration of novel materials and technology. The goal of the series is to bring together a wide range of perspectives that will enrich the field of architecture and design and foster a deeper understanding and development in the field.

As per Jasna Grujoska Kuneska, "this book successfully presents the importance of the church of St. Sophia in Ohrid, as a valuable heritage asset which reflects the Byzantine architectural achievements, but also as the symbol of the religious, cultural and political changes in the region." Asst. Prof. Marko Icev says that "the book is a welcomed addition to the literature on Byzantine and medieval architecture. It delivers a necessary update on previous literature while also delivering a comprehensive analysis for first time readers on the history of St. Sophia and Ohrid. The book is also a valuable resource for architectural scholars, students and lovers of architecture history."
