Balkan University Press is delighted to share the publication of the inaugural book of the Balkan Political Economy Series, edited by Asst. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Lokce. This book was co-edited with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Andrijana Bojadzievska Danevska, and it offers a comprehensive analysis of North Macedonia’s economic transformation since independence.

Consisting of 12 chapters, the book details the country’s journey of reform, resilience, and institutional change. As the first volume in the Balkan Political Economy Series, it begins with the historical and institutional context of the post-socialist transition, then explores key policy challenges such as macroeconomic stabilization, privatization, debt management, and fiscal reform. Special attention is given to sectoral transformations in agriculture, banking, and trade, supported by empirical analysis and policy recommendations. The book also addresses labor market dynamics and remittances, recognizing the influence of the diaspora on economic stability. Beyond economic indicators, it examines the political economy of EU integration, the development of SMEs, and the ongoing challenges of sustainable development. By combining historical narrative, sectoral insight, and strategic foresight, this volume serves as a valuable resource for scholars, policymakers, and students interested in the complex, multidimensional nature of economic reform in small transitional economies.

The Balkan Political Economy Series, published by Balkan University Press at the International Balkan University, is dedicated to rigorous analyses of political, economic, and institutional transformations across the Balkans. The series provides a platform for academics and experts to explore topics such as macroeconomic stabilization, fiscal reforms, agriculture and industry transformation, financial markets, labor and social outcomes, SMEs, trade, EU integration, and long-term development perspectives. Its inaugural volume focuses on North Macedonia and sets the foundation by examining the country's post-independence economic trajectory. Future volumes will extend to other Balkan countries, ensuring a comprehensive regional scope. An open call for the second volume will be announced soon, inviting contributions from scholars to further enrich this growing series.

The book is available open-access on the ibupress website, as well as EBSCO and JSTOR.
